Kodwa Primary School, India

In December 2006 Mita visited a primary school in a small village called Kodwa in the state of Gujarat in North West India.

The total population of Kodwa is approximately 400 and the main industry is farming. There is only one primary school in the village which has 70 students from the age of 5 to 10. Education is given priority by the villagers. Most of the children attending this school walk quite a distance to get to the school without any footwear.

The school's facilities are quite basic: students sit on the floor to study and the class room consists of a blackboard and a couple of tables. The roof has lots of holes and the rain pours through in the monsoon season. In the summer temperature rises to 45 degrees and there are no ceiling fans. Items such as ceiling fans, benches, basic sports equipment e.g. footballs and skipping ropes are seen as a luxury items, therefore they have none.

We're raising money so that when we visit the school in October 2007, with the help of the villagers, we can fix the school's three buildings and kit it out with additional educational resources and some sports equipment.

Any donation you can make, big or small, would be a tremendous help. All donations will be spent on items for the school.

Thanks for your support :0)
